After each Grand Prix and Pro Tour, the head judge is required to write a public report that is shared among L4 judges, L5 judges and Wizards staff; every time there is an interesting situation, we discuss it and, whenever necessary, we modify the policy document. One of the main goals is to learn from past experiences so that our future tournaments are better organized and unclear tournament situations are clarified.
For future events (beginning with the GPs that take place this weekend), you can expect that Cavern of Souls needs to be announced, otherwise (in ambiguous situations) your opponent will be allowed to counter your spell.
My suggestion is to agree with your opponent on a shortcut that will be to always use your Cavern’s special ability; if you go even further, you can keep a piece of paper in your deckbox saying “I will always use the Cavern’s special ability” and put it on the table at the beginning of the match, just like you do with tokens, counters, dice, score pad… (ok, ok, I’m joking, but this would surely work and make your spells uncounterable)
It’s important to note that any sign that you are using the special ability of the Cavern is acceptable; for example, you might just say “Red”, or “Cavern”, or point at it just like you would do when you declare a target, or say “uncounterable”.
Another aspect worth mentioning is that, if the Cavern is the only land that can produce the colored mana you need to legally cast a spell, we might assume that you are using the special ability and your opponent must realize it and not waste his Counterspell; just please leave the Cavern visible on the table and not hide it below the other lands in this case (this is a funny way to say that hiding important information on the table by putting other cards on top, with the goal that the opponent doesn’t see the card that is underneath, is not legal).
Finally, in case you have two Caverns on the table at the same time, please avoid ambiguity; the best way to prevent problems is by writing the creature type on a piece of paper or using a creature token of that type (just below the land, or next to it, or partially inserted in the same sleeve).
