1) Describe / Present yourself: who you are, what are you doing in your life, what are your current interests and future projects.I'm Earl Grant De Leon, presently working as a graphic artist here in a printing company in Manila, Philippines.. doing mostly magazine layouts, posters etc. as a day job and on my free time as a painter.
2) What about your artistic background?I finished studies with an Art Degree in Fine Arts majoring in Painting at the University of Santo Tomas (oldest university in Asia)
3) When have you started altering cards, and why?I should say i started long ago with just experimentations, but never was really serious since it has gain much popularity back then and gameplay of these cards are very much questionable. Went into the mainstream 2009 after which my friend discovered mtgsalvations and told me that i should create some cards for him and post it on the forums...from then it was history, Alter commissions locally and international orders became a huge hit!
4) What's your favorite Wizards of the Coast's artist? the most hated ( from an artistical point of view, of course )?Im really into CLASSICS, what i hate would be digital alters on this cards, i still admire what is painted/created by hands. Some of my personal favorites are Terese Nielsen, RK Post and Richard Kane Ferguson.
5) How do you usually realize your alterations? Which tecniques, methods, tools are you using?Ive been painting long ago, and much experience handling different media is an advantage..from charcoals, oils, watercolors..it's just a matter of putting my handwork onto this cardboards via acrylics
6) Have you got a web site with your works? This is where i store my works, from alters to painting...though some of stuff are not allowed to be displayed there : ).
My works can be seen too at various international forums...namely MTGsalvations, MTGthesource, 1MTG, TIPO.it, TheSPHERE.freeforums, NeutralGrounds and on Facebook too (just search for "the Alter Club")
7) Is it possibile to meet / invite you on public events? Will you alter cards "live" / during them?I usually visit local tourneys here especially if it's on a LEGACY Format, I play on Legacy tourneys here in the Philippines, I was suppose to be in GPProvidence last May when i was in the US, but i really had a very busy schedule during the 5 week trip, so it didnt materialize.. Doing alters on events is definitely fun! but usually i just play, ive been doing ARTS most of my time and playing would somehow gives me time to relax a bit : )
8) Are you going to accept any commitments? How much time is necessary for you to complete a requested alteration?Im always open for commissions, but then the long list has been piling up so, timeframe in which i have to deliver will definitely takes some time now, unlike before wherein the commissions are not that full.. I usually take 1 day off from work just to accomodate alter requests. I do work fast since i pretty much was able to develop efficient techniques and routines already. An alter would take an average of 1 to 2hours to get it done..talking about semi fullart to portrait alters.
9) Which advices would you give to anyone who is going to follow your artistic path?PRACTICE! that's the only we'll get better : )
This craft has been shared by others who has been made famous for by the Alters. Tools, techniques...everything has been discussed on threads and on the net, so basically every workable pattern and materials has already been provided. We just need to practice.
